The phoenix is a legendary monster. It is never generated randomly, although it is a possible polymorph outcome. Like other legendary monsters, tame phoenixes can be generated by placing an orb on an altar.
When a phoenix dies, it is replaced by a helpless phoenix egg. After several turns, the egg will hatch and a new phoenix will be born, similar to a lich and its phylactery. Defeating the egg will prevent the phoenix's rebirth.
