As you progress, you will become stronger and better equipped. A wise adventurer will seek to assemble a inventory of powerful weapons, armors and magics that compliment one another. Even rare runic equipment can be found by one who is worthy. It's improtant to keep moving, as you have only the one ration in your pack and any food may find along the way to sate you. Many a Rogue has starved to death in this quest.

If it all sounds like too much, fear not, for you are not alone. There are rumors of prisoners held captive throughout the dungeons. Some meek and some powerful. I've even heard unbeliveable stories of mythical creatures joining the fight to rescue the Amulet. These unlikely allies will swear alligence to you and fight by your side. They'll accompany you on your quest, growing stronger with you. Some have even survived long enough to ecsape the dungeon itself.

The Amulet of Yendor is the prize. It's what you came here to get but it will be no picnic. It will always be found on level 26 should you make it that far. Once you have it, your quest is not over. Although, it's considerably easier to retreat, some will think themselves as gods and press deeper yet.

Lumenstones are most common on level 27 and get progressively scarcer as one approaches level 40.

Welcome to the Dungeons of Doom! Somewhere, far below, down innumerable flights of stairs is the legendary Amulet of Yendor. The caves and rooms between you and it are full of foul monsters, deadly traps and other indescribeable horrors. Have you got what it takes to descend and emerge again safely, Amulet in hand? Or will some greater hero come along one day, to eat that stale ration of food and steal the leather armor from your withered skeleton?

The Structure of the Dungeon

The dungeon in Brogue is perfectly linear. Every dungeon level has one stair leading down and one stair leading up. Every level is guaranteed to be connected from stair to stair without necessitating crossing any traps, deep water, chasms, lava, or brimstone, although you might need to search to find your way and it might be convenient at times to cross deep water or brimstone.

As you descend you will discover new monsters at each depth. Their deadliness will increase as you move deeper, but the quality of the equipment you find does not depend on depth. The most powerful weapon or magic imaginable is as likely to be found on level 1 as level 40. If you find a great heavy weapon early and you are too weak to use, it's your responsibility to decide what to do with it.

As you progress, you will become stronger and better equipped. A wise adventurer will seek to assemble a inventory of powerful weapons, armors and magics that compliment one another. Even rare runic equipment can be found by one who is worthy. It's important to keep moving, as you have only the one ration in your pack and any food may find along the way to sate you. Many a Rogue has starved to death in this quest.

If it all sounds like too much, fear not, for you are not alone. There are rumors of prisoners held captive throughout the dungeons. Some meek and some powerful. I've even heard unbelievable stories of mythical creatures joining the fight to rescue the Amulet. These unlikely allies will swear allegience to you and fight by your side. They'll accompany you on your quest, growing stronger with you. Some have even survived long enough to escape the dungeon itself.

Be afraid, for dungeon isn't merely comprised of random caves etched into the hardened Earth by the hand of time. No. The Dungeons of Doom has a creator. A dark and malevolent presence that painstakingly engineered the evils that await you. Treasure laden vaults will tempt you into deadly traps comprised of diabolical clockwork machines and creatures aided by ancient magics bound together.

The Amulet of Yendor is the prize. It's what you came here to get but it will be no picnic. It will always be found on level 26 should you make it that far. Once you have it, your quest is not over. You still have to make it out alive. The Amulet provides sustenance, so one need barely eat at all once it's in one's possession. Although, it's considerably easier to retreat, some will think themselves as gods and press deeper yet.

Below level 26 the dungeon become even more dangerous. Here is where the bravest or most foolhardy of Rogues will try to find and collect lumenstones. These prized objects are very valuable should you escape with them, but completely worthless to a charred corpse. None the less, blinded by greed, you will foolishly fill your inventory with stone, leaving less space for the resources you need to survive. Lumenstones are most common on level 27 and get progressively scarcer as one approaches level 40.

Level 40 is rock bottom. No one has ever gone further as there is no place else to go. There you will find another exit from the dungeon, a magical portal accessible only if you have the Amulet of Yendor in hand. If you leave through this portal then you have truly mastered the Dungeons of Doom. Mastery typically involves also leaving with at least some if not all 25 lumenstones.
